A New GSH Website is On Line
Get a preview at http://www.GSHtx.org
Your first question may be "Why GSHtx.org and not GSH.org?" Unfortunately, that domain name was already taken. But we will keep an eye out and if they ever drop that name, we will grab it.
Your second question is likely to be "Why bother to change the website software?" The answer is that the GSH wants to add new functionality and features that simply were not available with the old "brochure-style" (read-only) design. You will recognize the new look if you are familiar with the websites of the HGS or the Gulf Coast Section of the SPE.
What's new? Well, first, you should know that if you have ever been a member of the GSH or the HGS, you are pre-registered on the new GSH website. We used the data from the GSH and HGS office databases to create your on-line membership. If you are a current member of the GSH, you automatically get access to any members-only features. If your membership has lapsed, or you are a member of the HGS only, you are still pre-registered, but will not find your name in the on-line membership directory. In any case, DO NOT SELF-REGISTER unless you have never been a member of the GSH or the HGS.
If you are pre-registered, you can retrieve your pre-set username and password. Go to http://www.gshtx.org and ask for your "forgotten" password. Enter your e-mail address (the address where we sent this email announcement to you) and you will get your password within minutes. Log in and check your personal data (My Information -> My Record) and change your password and username if you like.
So what's old and what's new? We have moved most of the old website over to the new site and will move the rest as time allows. That material continues to be available to all visitors, whether they log-in or not, whether they are registered or not. Some of the new material, like the interactive calendar, is available to all visitors. However, to make use of its new features, you may need to log in.
What new features?
1. Anyone who logs into the GSH website can add an event to the GSH calendar. It must be of interest to members, of course, and it will not be visible to visitors until it is approved by the webmaster.
2. Beginning in March, anyone logged in can make reservations for GSH events on line. And you can pay for them on line if you like. The website will be the sole repository for reservations so, even if you are computerphobic and fax or email your reservation to the GSH office, the GSH secretary will have to go on the website and enter your reservation for you.
3. Job listings are now handled two ways: A. You can continue to send Employment Referrals to Sam LeRoy. B. Alternatively, any person logged onto the GSH website can enter them on the Job Board. Sam LeRoy may or may not enter data on the Job Board, depending on the wishes of the submitting company.
4. We have a space for bulletin-board-like Forums. If you want to moderate one, let the Webmaster know the title and subject.
5. Anyone logged in can post a Press Release or a Technical Article. Subject to editorial approval, of course.
6. If you are a current member of the GSH, you may post your resume on the website. You must be logged in and the website will verify your membership status. If you are not current, it will say "Resume Add - Non Member" and the add button will not work.
And many, many more features too numerous to list here.
