An N-dimensional Parameter Space Inversion (PSI) has been developed that provides and efficient tool for the integration of potential field data with existing seismic interpretations. The N dimensions represent the number of key parameters which determine the final model solution of an inversion process. In the PSI, each of these key parameters are allowed to vary within user define limits, and are typically given a degree of freedom to encapsulate all reasonable variations of each respective parameter.
The seismic interpretation is passed against the N-dimensional parameter space to determine if the potential field data can produce a solution agreeing with the seismic interpretation. Outliers in the seismic interpretation are rapidly identified. Two classes of possible explanation for these outliers are; 1) an incorrect seismic interpretation, and 2) anomalous behavior in one or more of the N parameters.
Salt geometries studies from the deep water Gulf of Mexico are used to illustrate the operation of the PSI. Areas of anomalous sediment densities, potential autochthonous salt systems, regions of potential overpressure, and areas of possible seismic interpretation errors are identified.
Ugandan Lake Albert Rift System
Recent exploration successes in the Lake Albert rift basin have spike interest in the tertiary basins of the East African Rift System. Extensional and transpressional tectonic activity has formed complex basement structures within the rift basins. Several recent discoveries have been made in areas surrounding the Albertine Graben. An airborne full tensor gravity gradiometry survey was flown in the Northern area of the Albertine Graben. The full tensor data was integrated with 2D seismic data to; guide the interpolation of structures between seismic lines, help identify new structures, assist in depth estimates of basement structures, determine fault correlations, and facilitate basement characteristic studies. The full tensor gradiometer and 2D seismic data provided an ideal opportunity to apply the Parameter Space Inversion.
