Seismic Characterization of the Niobrara: Unconventional Play using Full; Azimuth 3D Seismic
Major interest in theNiobrara has been spurred by the latest recovery techniques in sub-surface simulation as is typically of all unconventional plays. The Niobrara, of mid-upper Cretaceous age, was deposited in the ancient seaway running north/south through the western part of the North American continent, was strongly influenced by the late Cretaceous Laramide Orogeny, and located in what is now Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. It’s equivalent to the south is the Austin Chalk. The Niobrara is a series of carbonates with highly organic rich shales sandwiched in-between, located in a thermally mature fairway with initial production from individual wells up to 1500 bopd.

Tony Rebec, is a Senior Geoscientist at Geokinetics based in Houston. He has over 45 years of experience in the seismic services business starting his career as a geophysicist at Geophysical Services Inc, the founding company of Texas Instruments. Through various buyouts and acquisitions he has held both technical and managerial positions with Halliburton, Western Geophysical, Coherence Technology Company, Core Lab and Paradigm Geophysical. His experience has spanned seismic acquisition and design, seismic processing and interpretation, reservoir characterization and 4D seismic monitoring.
Tony worked with many of the earlier 3D seismic surveys and was involved in the development and use of the earlier techniques for assisting 3D interpretation, including the interactive interpretation workstation. In the mid 90’s he was instrumental in institutionalizing the Coherence Cube technique throughout the world and establishing it as a key tool for both structural and stratigraphic delineation. Tony is currently involved in both domestic and international reservoir characterization projects. He has written, published and presented many technical papers on innovative techniques and case histories. Tony holds a B.Sc. in both geology and mathematics from London University and is a 45 year member of Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
