GSH Technical Lunch March 16th Pellazzio March 17th Petroleum Club Craig Beasley completed B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics and then joined Western Geophysical in 1981. He served in several capacities in the Computer Sciences, R&D, and Data Processing departments including worldwide VP of R&D and worldwide VP of Data Processing in Western Geophysical and continued as VP, Data Processing after the formation of WesternGeco. He has received two Litton Technology Awards, a Performed by Schlumberger Silver Medal, the SEG Award for Best Presentation and served as the Esso Australia Distinguished Lecturer. He received honorable mention for the Best Paper in Geophysics. He is an Honorary Member of the Geophysical Society of Houston and Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He has presented papers and published widely on a variety of topics ranging from prestack imaging, migration, acquisition, and the connections among acquisition, processing, and imaging....

Geophysics under stress: Geomechanical applications of seismic and borehole acoustic waves

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The integrated nature of this course means that it is suitable for individuals from all subsurface disciplines including geophysics, geomechanics, rock physics, petrophysics, geology, geomodeling, and drilling, reservoir, and petroleum engineering. The short-course presentation, limited to one-day, will provide an overview of the basic concepts and applications, and minimizes the use of mathematical developments. As a result, the course presentation does not require a theoretical background and can be attended by a broad section of working geoscientists and engineers interested in applying geophysical data to the solution of geomechanical problems. The course book will provide support for the course, and further extend some of the more technical considerations.

Speaker Colin Sayers

Colin Sayers is a Scientific Advisor in the Schlumberger Data & Consulting Services Geomechanics Group in Houston, USA, providing consultancy in geophysics, rock physics, drilling and reservoir geomechanics, and the characterization of fractured reservoirs. He entered the oil industry to join Shell's Exploration and Production Laboratory in Rijswijk, The Netherlands in 1986, and moved to Schlumberger in 1991.

The New GSH Job Board

The GSH Job Board now assists you in three ways::

1. There is a confidential Employment Referral Service that works like the original GSH Employment Referral Service (GSH-ERS). Employers and job-seekers send job listings and resumes to the Chairman of the GSH-ERS Committee. The Chairman responds to the employer with a set of resumes that look like they meet his or her requirements. These requests and resumes are not made known to the general public. Some employers prefer this to the Job Board model.

2. There is a similar but publicly displayed Job Board for:

A. Jobs that employers want to have published on the GSH website. Anyone may post a job opening at no cost but they must be registered users of the GSH Website and logged in under their user name and password.
B. Resumes of job seekers looking for regular employment who want their resumes published. Only current GSH members may post their resumes. They may include their name and address or post them anonymously. As before, resumes may also be posted by consultants looking for contract work or individuals who do specialty service work. Resumes will remain posted for one year unless you delete it or ask that it be put in stand-by. If you want it to remain longer than one year, notify the GSH webmaster when it expires.

The Geophysical Society of Houston was formed in 1947 to promote the science and profession of geophysics, and to foster fellowship and cooperation among all persons interested in geophysics. The GSH forms the heart of a Houston-based geophysical community and gives opportunities to interact with colleagues throughout the profession. It is a public foundation and a charitable, tax-exempt organization under 501(c)(3) of the IRS tax codes.

Currently the largest Section of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the GSH encourages and supports scientific, educational, and charitable activities of benefit to geophysicists.

GSH Job Board

As of August 15, 2008 the GSH Board has voted to charge for job postings.

The cost is $50 for 14 days and $100 for 30 days payable by credit card.

How to Join

GSH offers four classes of membership: Active, Associate, Emeritus, and Student. The membership year runs from July 1 through June 30. Annual dues are $30.00 for Active and Associate members, $15.00 for Emeritus and Student members. Before submitting your application, please review the qualifications for your desired membership classification.

Membership Qualifications

Applicants for Active Membership, who are not currently Active Members of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, must provide the name of one sponsor who is currently an Active Member of GSH.

Applicants for Student Membership must provide the name of a school administrator or faculty member who can certify as to their being a full-time student. You may call the GSH office at 713-463-9476 for names of Active GSH members in your company or organization.

In order to avoid processing delays, it is important that all requested information is provided on the application. If the online application does not work properly, you can download a copy of the application form to print and mail in with payment, or request an application from the GSH office at 713-463-9476.

HISTORY OF THE GSH The origin of the Geophysical Society of Houston dates back to the fall of 1947. On October 7th of that year, Walter J. Osterhoudt was named as temporary chairman of a Constitutional Committee and Dr. E. E. Rosaire was made chairman of a Nominating Committee. At 4:00 PM on Thursday, November 20, 1947, 108 geophysicists met in the Houston Engineers Club to form what was then called the Houston Section of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (the name was not changed to the Geophysical Society of Houston until about ten years later). The meeting was called to order by Dr. L. W. Blau who presented the proposed constitution and Dr. Rosaire read the list of officer nominees. The constitution was accepted and Walter Osterhoudt was elected the first President of the Section. On December 2, 1947, the Executive Committee of the Houston Section prepared a formal petition for the local section and the formal charter was issued on February 14, 1948. The first technical...
