Speaker Biography: Sofia Campbell
Sofia Campbell holds a dual degree in Petroleum Geophysics and Geology from the University of Melbourne, Australia and Curtin University of Technology Perth, Australia. In 1991 she started her career in Australia as an Interpretation Geophysicist for SANTOS (conventional plays) and Origin Energy (CBM – before it was labeled as unconventional). Sofia then moved to Houston in 1998, where she held a number of Senior Geoscientist positions within Schlumberger. In 2007 Sofia started Energy Professional Search, a recruiting business that specializes in upstream oil and gas industry placements in the USA and abroad.
Since 2009, Sofia has progressively increased her commitment to the success of the Geophysical Society of Houston, (GSH) in numerous volunteer and chair positions. In June 2016, she completed a two-year Board of Director position for the GSH as First Vice President, overseeing over 80 technical events annually for the organization and netting significant profits in a downturned economy. Sofia was also instrumental in the creation and success of the GSH’s Inaugural Diversity and Women’s Networking Event this spring; and the even more successful sponsorship-driven second event, “Alchemy of Success” in the fall.
In 2015 and 2016 Sofia contributed to AWG, OTC and the Women’s Global Leadership Conference in Energy as an invited speaker at several events, addressing topics that included: networking, personal branding, creating a diverse workforce, promoting STEM, negotiating salaries and building a strong resume.
Currently, Sofia is serving as a Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Section Representative for the GSH and Chair of GSH Women’s events. She looks forward to continuing to: contribute to the technical quality of the GSH organization’s events, support the SEG and promote the very exciting and challenging energy industry amongst the newest recruits. Sofia's other professional memberships include the SEG, AAPG, HGS, AWG and WEN.

Speaker Biography: George Laguros, Marathon Oil
George
Laguros received a B.S. in Geophysics with Distinction from the
University of Oklahoma in 1985, and an M.A. in Geological Sciences from
the University of Texas at Austin in 1987. He began his employment as a
geophysicist with Marathon Oil Corporation in 1987, and for 27 years
worked on a variety of exploration and production projects in East
Africa, the North Sea, Western Siberia, the U.S. Mid-Continent and the
Gulf of Mexico. In 2014 he was appointed Geoscience Career Development
Manager, responsible for graduate and intern hiring, assignment
management, technical training and development, and technical succession
planning for over 200 geoscientists and technicians. In 2015 he
assumed his current role of Senior Staff Process Improvement Consultant,
providing tools, expertise, training and support for continuous
improvement projects across the company.
