Speaker: Yohanes Nuwara, Senior Subsurface Data Scientist, Aker BP
Seismic interpretation is regarded as a key value driver across the exploration and production (E&P) project lifecycle, supporting decisions from subsurface understanding to field development. While legacy interpretation software continues to evolve rapidly, the geoscience community has also seen the emergence of diverse open-source tools for seismic interpretation. These tools offer flexibility, transparency, and access to advanced workflows, including deep learning-based segmentation. However, many seismic interpreters and subsurface professionals who are not familiar with programming still face a high barrier to entry when attempting to use them effectively. At the same time, agentic AI is changing how users interact with technology by enabling systems that can plan, orchestrate tools, and automate complex workflows through natural language interaction. This talk presents how AI agents can be used to bridge the gap between open-source geoscience software and practical seismic interpretation workflows. The discussion will be illustrated through a demonstration of Boglodite, an open-source AI agent for subsurface and geoscience applications that orchestrates open-source tools for seismic interpretation. Using a 3D seismic post-stack time migration (PSTM) cube, the demonstration will show how Boglodite runs facies segmentation with MalenoV and fault segmentation with faultSeg, both of which are deep learning-based models. Through this example, the talk highlights how agentic AI can lower technical barriers, improve workflow accessibility, and enable seismic interpreters to leverage open-source innovation more efficiently while keeping domain expertise central to the interpretation process.
Speaker Biography:
Yohanes Nuwara is a Senior Subsurface Data Scientist at Aker BP in Norway. Since joining the company in 2025, he has worked with the Subsurface Data Science group on the development of internal agentic artificial intelligence (AI) software for the company’s internal subsurface documents and data. He also contributes to the Geophysics group, where he is involved in developing data-driven algorithms for Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data. Prior to Aker BP, Yohanes worked as a consultant with Prores AS and Whitson AS in 2024, contributing to AI initiatives in core image processing and hydrocarbon pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) analysis. Beyond the oil and gas sector, he served as an Expert Data Scientist at Sinarmas, one of Asia’s largest paper manufacturing and forestry companies, where he worked on computer vision projects in geospatial photogrammetry with LiDAR and helped build a data analytics portfolio to support the company’s sustainability efforts. Earlier in his career, he was a geophysical researcher at the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) in Kyoto, Japan, where he worked within the CO2 Geosequestration group. Yohanes holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Geophysics from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia, and a Master of Science in Business Analytics and Big Data from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He is also an active educator in Python programming and subsurface data science, having trained professionals from various companies, and has developed several open-source programs for subsurface data analysis.
