The correct assessment of the economic viability of a potential prospect and the risks associated with drilling it is usually based on a single final image. This final image was created using earth model building process that in principle is non-unique due to several ways of combination of anisotropy parameters, velocity field and interpretation. All these creates uncertainties to any conclusion or decision derived from that final image. The seismic industry has therefore turned to seismic uncertainty analysis (SUA) workflows to analyze and quantify this model uncertainty and its impact on the final images and so help in prospect decision making. This presentation introduces a practical SUA methodology base on tomography null space scanning to quantify earth model uncertainty. The presentation also explains the fundamentals of this SUA workflow and shows some history cases where this technique has been applied to compute structural uncertainty, gross rock volume statistics, fault placement, well trajectory, and spill points uncertainty due to overburden effects.
Speaker Biography: Juan Paulo Perdomo, SLB
Juan Perdomo has been in the industry for 20+ years in which he has worked in several areas around the world within different environments, data sets and diverse of processing challenges. During his career, he had the opportunity to join research and engineering team and worked in reservoir characterization groups. His expertise is seismic data processing and model building. He completed his Master in Geoscience from University of Houston in 2012, and he is author and co-author of several papers for different journals. Currently, he is working for SLB as Area Geophysicist based in Houston.
